Rocky Point Union Free School District

Message for Driver Education Students

How will students in Drivers’ Education be impacted by the closure?

We have been in contact with the State Department which oversees the Driver’s Education program in order to address concerns and to provide accurate information. The District completed a survey that was sent to us indicating our questions and concerns which include potential make-up time, overlap sessions, potentially waived hours, and online lecture.

We are working with the Department of Motor Vehicles, council’s office, and New York State Education Department (NYSED)  administration to resolve these policy questions and provide you with the answers you need.  As soon as we have information to share, we will let you know.

3.21.2020 Message from Rocky Point Schools

March 21, 2020

Dear Rocky Point School Community,

As the situation surrounding the Coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic continues to evolve, the district would like to update you with important information regarding student learning, including scheduled standardized, Regents, and AP testing, communication, childcare, and free and reduced lunch services being provided throughout the closure. Please be assured that we continue to have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of the writing of this letter.

In an effort to ensure continuity of student learning, our teachers will continue to provide work in a variety of ways, including posting to eBoard. The eBoard link is on the school homepage and can be accessed at . As a reminder, parents can contact their child’s and/or building administrator by visiting eBoard and clicking on the envelope icon on the top left of the eBoard. Please do not leave voicemails for staff as no one will be in the buildings to access the messages.

In light of the school closures due to COVID-19, New York State Education Department has suspended all 3-8 exams in ELA, Math, Science and the K-12 NYSESLAT and NYSAA exams. At this time, we have yet to receive guidance on Regents Exams. Advanced Placement (AP) exams will be administered online from student’s homes this year. Specific information will be available this week on our website and the College Board website. Please check back often for the most updated information.

The Rocky Point School District is providing families with an online support form to provide technology support for password resets for Google (students) as well as questions for building administration (instructional), athletics, “grab and go lunch” and other areas. The link to the online help desk form can be found on the school website on the home page or directly accessed by clicking .

Also, beginning on Monday, March 23, a new live help desk will be up and running for staff and students for eSchool, eBoard, Google Apps, and other password resets. The live help desk can also answer questions about Google Apps for Education for those that are using Google Docs and Classroom. The phone number for the help desk is 631-982-4775. The help desk will be open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to noon and from 2:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

SCOPE Education Services is providing emergency extended school-age childcare during this difficult time for students ages 5-12, which typically are grades K-5. The program will be held at the Andrew Muller Primary School in the Miller Place School District. Registration is limited to parents/guardians in the Miller Place, Rocky Point, and Mount Sinai districts who are First Responders and/or Medical Personnel. This is a five day a week program (3/23/2020 – 4/1/2020) and runs from 7 AM to 6 PM. The end date may change based on need. This program is dependent upon sufficient enrollment. The link to the online registration flier can be found on the school website on the home page or directly accessed by clicking http://koosercabins.com/NewsAssets/113148/SCOPE31920.pdf.

For families currently receiving free and reduced lunch, “grab and go lunch” will continue at the Joseph A. Edgar School by the cafeteria door between the hours of 11 AM and 12:30 PM. Effective Monday, March 23rd, the program will operate on a Monday and Wednesday schedule only in an effort to follow updated social distancing recommendations. Each eligible student will receive two lunches on Monday and three on Wednesday. In addition, the District is currently working with Long Island Cares to provide additional meals to these families. More information will be provided.

Please remember that it is important to follow the CDC recommendations and practice social distancing. All playgrounds at FJC and JAE have been closed. Families should remind their children to avoid large gatherings. Additional communications will be sent as new information becomes available.

We hope you and your families stay well through this ever-changing situation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott O’Brien
